SAM SMITH FORCED TO GIVE PARTIAL WRITING CREDITS TO TOM PETTY FOR ‘STAY WITH ME’

Soul singer Sam Smith found himself in quite a predicament this past weekend. According to The Sun, Smith silently settled a copyright dispute with Tom Petty over the likeness between The Lonely Hours’ three-time Grammy-nominated “Stay With Me” and Full Moon Fever’s hit “I Won’t Back Down” — which was co-written with ELO’s Jeff Lynne.

According to the British star’s representative regarding the similarities between the songs, “Although the likeness was a complete coincidence, all involved came to an immediate and amicable agreement in which Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne are now credited as co-writers of ‘Stay With Me’ along with Sam Smith, James Napier and William Phillips.”
