Actress KeKe Palmer gets the surprise of her life when she took a trip to the Historically Black College & University Paul Quinn College and the university gave her an acceptance letter. Palmer, who never had the chance to go to college had an opportunity to talk to the students.
She also wrote the experience on her website and here is what she said about her surprise:
This past week has been truly special! I am really excited as I’ve just finished the first three chapters of my book. I cannot wait for you all to read it .. It’s such an interesting process, book writing. I am thankful to have assistance from a woman named Allison. She has been truly helpful in teaching me the structure of book writing. I was homeschooled most of my life and I can sometimes be insecure when it comes to structured writing. Ha, I will be honest about that . . but, I have always enjoyed telling stories. I feel as if I’m very familiar with the way that the mind processes things. I think acting helped me with that and I believe that that’s why my storytelling is something I am known for. I love delivering messages! Not to mention, I grew up with a deacon as a father, so I guess it’s in my blood haha .. I’m having fun nonetheless and my book agent (Lacy) , ugh, I love her! She truly understands me and I feel she is guiding me in such an expansive direction. It’s not the same as acting but it is the same in the sense of where I’m allowed to touch people.
This past week Lacy took me to speak to some kids at Paul Quinn. I love speaking at schools and have been doing so since I was about 11. As a kid I just felt it was fun talking to some people my age, but the older I get the more important it is to me for them to know my story. I understand that what they think of me and what my actual journey looked/looks like does not always coincide. I realize that in order to really be of service to them I have to get them to understand that I am just like them, that I am not any more special than they are, and that my struggles mirror a lot of theirs. It seems as if I’m giving so much but being around my peers does so much for me! Growing up in the industry, even though my family did a great job of keeping me balanced, that world is very much all about THAT WORLD. To be apart of what’s really happening with my generation, the culture, the topics, the pressures, and the fears- THAT is what inspires me. It’s those stories and those people that give reason to the usage of my gifts.
Here are some of the pictures and video from her visit:
Currently, she is working on a book and season two of her hit show, Scream Queens. You could read the rest of her heartfelt open letter here.
Congratulations to this beautiful woman!
